Health Disparities in Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities

Health data on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are often put into one category, which can mask meaningful differences among the numerous AAPI subgroups. This webinar will share health disparities and data collection in AAPI communities and some policy options to address the issue. Moderator: Representative Ryan Yamane, Hawaii, Co-Chair, NAPACSL Health, Human Services and Housing Committee Co-Chair. Speakers: Stella S. Yi, MPH, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Population Health, NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Keeping Health Care Accessible: Provider Licensing and Interstate Compacts

To ensure safety and quality of care, states continually examine their licensing requirements for health care providers. This webinar will explain licensure requirements broadly, including policy options that legislators may choose to use to improve access to care. Interstate compacts will also be discussed with state respondents discussing how they have used compacts in their state to increase access to a variety of providers. Moderator: Sydne Enlund, senior policy specialist, NCSL. Speakers: Matthew Shafer, deputy policy director of the National Center for Interstate Compacts, The Council of State Governments, Representative Kay Khan, Massachusetts and Representative Norma Kirk-McCormick, Kentucky.

Cancer Disparities Facing Asian American Communities

Certain cancers disproportionately affect Asian Americans but some of these high rates can be seen only through disaggregated data. Asian Americans are the first racial group in the country to experience cancer as the leading cause of death. This webinar will highlight the data related to cancer in Asian American communities and strategies to combat high cancer rates. Moderator: Representative Ryan Yamane, Hawaii, NAPACSL Health, Human Services and Housing Co-Chair. Speakers: Moon S. Chen, Jr., M.P.H., Ph.D., Professor & Associate Director, Community Outreach & Engagement, University of California, Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics and Federally Qualified Health Centers: Opportunities for Collaboration

As states deal with the effects of COVID-19, maximizing and streamlining health care services are priorities for many state leaders. This webinar will introduce the audience to Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC), Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and how their services can be considered separately or in tandem to improve population health in all communities.

Health Care Costs 101: What’s a State to Do?

Health care costs continue to be a top priority for state legislators and their constituents. However, addressing those costs—and understanding what drives them—can be a complicated task. This webinar will feature national and state perspectives on tackling major cost issues, including commercial health care prices and improving efficiencies within the health care system. Speaker: Michael Chernew, PhD,  professor, Department of Health Care Policy, Harvard Medical School, Senator Bryan Townsend, Delaware and Grant Thomas, director, Georgia Office of Health Strategy and Coordination
