Foreign entities can purchase or lease land in the United States for a variety of reasons, including growing specialty crops, research, renewable energy development or investment holdings. Currently, foreign ownership is less than 4% of private domestic agricultural land, with 48% of those holdings being forest land. However, foreign ownership can cause concerns when it negatively impacts local agricultural operations or results in environmental harm.
