Elections and Redistricting

2022 Election Recap

On Nov. 8, voters decided thousands of legislative seats, dozens of governors and ballot questions galore. Did major political change come to the states? NCSL experts break down the data and discuss the key issues and trends that framed the 2022 elections.

Two Secretaries, One Goal: Strong Elections

Each state runs elections differently, but none compromise on the paramount goal of accuracy. Hear from two secretaries of state from opposite ends of the political spectrum on how they maintain and ensure free, fair and accurate elections in their respective states. Spoiler: There are more similarities than you think!

Census Accuracy: Learn How You Can Weigh In

The U.S. Census Bureau works all decade long to produce good data—and provides ways for counties, cities and other local jurisdictions that aren’t satisfied with their numbers to appeal or even ask for a new count. While these options won’t change redistricting data, they will matter when it comes to federal, and often state, funding. Learn how you can help ensure your jurisdiction’s data is as accurate as possible even at this point in the cycle.

Accuracy, Quality and the 2020 Census

With the 2020 census results out, many are eager to use the data—and to assess its accuracy. The U.S. Census Bureau has begun releasing its own data-quality evaluations, with national results from the 2020 Post-Enumeration Survey and the 2020 Demographic Analysis estimates. Data users outside the bureau are looking at quality, too. In this webinar, we’ll discuss this decade’s census data quality and how it compares with that of previous decades, what additional analyses are coming from inside and outside the bureau, and what questions remain. Moderator: Wendy Underhill, Director of the Elections & Redistricting Program, NCSL. Speakers: Tim Kennel, assistant division chief for statistical methods, U.S. Census Bureau, Teresa Sullivan, chair, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Panel to Evaluate the Quality of the 2020 Census and Dr. William O'Hare, president, O'Hare Data and Demographic Services LLC.

Election Mis- and Disinformation—and How Legislators Can Counter It

In the lead-up to a heated midterm election, MDM—or mis-, dis- and malinformation—is a pervasive threat, with sources both foreign and domestic. MDM can mislead, confuse, anger or discourage voters, and it can also make elections harder to run. Join this webinar to find out more about the consequences of MDM internationally and at home and learn what legislators can do about it as both community leaders and lawmakers. Moderator: Mandy Zoch, project manager, NCSL’s Elections and Redistricting Program. Speaker: Matt Masterson, director of information integrity, Microsoft and Rachel Chernasky, Digital Threat Analyst, Microsoft.
